Sub-millimetre wave radiometry for cloud and rain characterization: From simulation to Earth observation mission concept

چکیده
Mots-clés : Radiométrie sub-millimétrique Instrumentation Nuage Pluie Mission d’observation de la Terre Different studies and instrument/mission proposals have demonstrated the potential of the passive sub-millimetre–millimetre wave (SMMW) radiometry to provide remote measurements for the characterization of clouds and rain. At these wavelengths radiation received by a satellite over ice clouds is dominantly scattered by the ice particles. Vertically integrated ice and water contents, hydrometeor properties and profiles can then be retrieved from the radiometric observations with the use of multi-frequency retrieval schemes based on inversion databases simulating realistic brightness temperatures from in situ or modeled cloud microphysics profiles. Current technological SMMW developments offer new observational perspectives for the characterization of the atmosphere. © 2011 Académie des sciences. Published by Elsevier Masson SAS. Recent Developments in a Passive Sub Millimetre-wave Radiometry Mission for Operational Meterology and Climatology
Passive Microwave Radiometry has provided an important contribution to global Numerical Weather Prediction and climatology since the mid-seventies using data using instrumentation such as AMSUA&B and MHS. It is now widely considered that further improvements can be made by addressing the uncertainties associated with ice clouds for which there is a lack of suitable global observations. Sub mill...
متن کاملCloud and Precipitation Observation by Spaceborne Radar in Japan: Current and Future Missions
The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) is a Japan-US joint satellite mission which equips the world first spaceborne precipitation radar (PR) as well as microwave imager (TMI) and has been producing very valuable precipitation data more than twelve years. This long term precipitation record including vertical profile information from the TRMM PR made it possible to provide not only the ...
متن کاملSub - Millimetre Wavelength Region
Satellite observation of Earth's atmosphere in the millimetre and sub-millimetre wavelength region is complementary to those in the visible and infrared spectral region. The emission and opacity of the atmosphere, and scattering by ice particles are all exploited for sensing various layers of the atmosphere in terms of water vapour content, temperature, molecular composition, precipitating wate...
متن کاملThe Landsat Science Mission: Today and Tomorrow
The technical innovations of precise numerical radiometry, spectral differentiation and seasonally repetitive monitoring, introduced by the Landsat system, have created a new measurement approach to terrestrial monitoring. The Landsat-7 mission reflects significant progress in realizing the scientific potential of this measurement strategy. Substantial improvements in calibration procedures, bo...
متن کاملCubeSail for Near Earth Object Observation
Microsatellites known as “CubeSats” have recently been developed to enable comparatively inexpensive and timely access to space for small payloads. As a new standard for small satellites, the CubeSat has shown great promise for space applications such as earth observation, planetary science and space physics mission. In this paper a “CubeSail” mission – a CubeSat deployed with a solar sail –for...
